FCCC Fall In-Service
As part of FCCC’s commitment to professional development, we had the pleasure of offering an in-service on November 15 on reflective practice. The presentation was made by Laura Gow, the RECE Professional Learning Facilitator for Childcare and Early Years Services in the City of Kingston and Frontenac County. Laura spoke eloquently about the meaning and value of being a reflective educator, the connection to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Early Childhood Educators and “How Does Learning Happen?” This reminded us of the importance of viewing the child as competent, capable of complex thinking, curious…
Laura spoke eloquently about the meaning and value of being a reflective educator, the connection to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Early Childhood Educators and “How Does Learning Happen?” This reminded us of the importance of viewing the child as competent, capable of complex thinking, curious and rich in potential; and how to build our reflections on our daily practices. The 35 educators in attendance had a chance to participate in several small group discussions lead by Laura.
As part of the in-service, all FCCC centres created a virtual tour of their programs which included a look at the physical space (play areas, outdoor space, bulletin boards); of what the children have been interested in, samples of documentation that illustrated areas of interest, photos, projects, invitations and provocations. There was a variety of displays from iPad videos, to pieces of artwork, children’s written testimonials of what they would like other centres to know about their programs, colleges and written documentation. Educators involved children and families to create this virtual tour which gave each and everyone present a chance to see what each individual FCCC program offered. It was evident, as we walked through the tour, that the educators had worked hard and with pride to present their displays! Educators also networked and exchanged professional information and the ambience was upbeat and positive. We look forward to offering another in-service in the springtime.
