Centennial in March

A new Educator started at the Centennial program at the start of February. The month was spent getting to know each other. Once we were well acquainted we began exploring emotions and what it means when we have different emotions. How do emotions make us or others feel? What are good and healthy ways to express these emotions? We have been discussing different tools we can use when feeling angry, sad or anxious. We decided to make our own sensory bottles to help with these emotions. Our Educator brought out all of the supplies (glue, stickers, pom poms, pipe cleaners, etc.) and let us express our creative freedom by decorating and filling our bottles however we chose, with there being no right or wrong way. While working on our bottles, conversations were had about how and when we could use our bottles and how they could help us. It was important and helpful to not only identify our emotions, but to talk openly about them and brainstorm the tools that will help us. Some expressed how “they don’ t think a sensory bottle will help them to regulate their emotions”. This sparked further discussion about how “what works for one person, may not work for everyone” and that is perfectly okay. We all left the activity with a better understanding of our emotions and self-regulation.
