A Hockey Game at FCCC-Elginburg!

Our Before and Afterschool Program students have been very excited about this years Winter Olympics. We decided to bring the Olympics to us. We have done paper plate curling, an amazing snow obstacle course with jumps and winter boot skiing. Our favorite activity has been our magnet air hockey games! The children have made this game so much fun, and have brought an amazing amount of joy into our program. We’ve created a real team inspired environment, as if we are our own Olympic team! We started our magnet air hockey games by using our square magnets to set up our air hockey stadium. Next, we added our playdough containers for the paddles and used the lid for the puck. As we started playing, different thoughts and ideas about how we can add to the game emerged. One child said, “What if we made this into a 3D air hockey table?”. This inspired the children to turn the magnets upright and use some of our different magnet shapes as reinforcements. Our air hockey table was now turning into a 3D model, and a different version of the game took hold. By allowing the children’s imaginations to guide us, new and exciting forms of the original idea began to take shape. The children weren’t done there. They discussed that they usually see people and signs in the stands at the Olympics. They decided they would use our white board and markers to write encouraging messages to our players, “GO TEAM GO”, “YOU’VE GOT THIS CANADA”. This game of air hockey turned into crowds of the before and after school students showing their support, joy and encouragement for our players and bringing discussions of how Team Canada will do at the Olympics during the Winter Games. The Olympics and our love of hockey have brought so much magic and excitement to our days. Go Canada!
